ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE-KBIM) - Two Roswell parents face felony child-abuse charges after police reported their 2-year-old child tested positive for pot and meth.
And police say they're surprised they don't see more of these cases.
It all started with a phone call.
An anonymous tip alleging a smell of marijuana led police officers to a house on Sunshine Place.
When officers entered the home they said they found drugs and a toddler in dangerous conditions. Police then called in the state Children, Youth and Families Department.
"While in CYFD custody, the child was tested for the presence of drugs in the child's system,' Roswell police Sgt. Levi Moody said. "The child did test positive for more than one kind of illegal drug."
A CYFD affidavit states the child had methamphetamine and marijuana in its system.
When the test results came back, police arrested Joshua Buenrostro, 20, and Cecilia Ogas, 23, on charges of felony child abuse.
Police believe the child is still in CYFD custody. And, they added, this is not an isolated case.
"Drug use is so prevalent that these kids are being exposed way too often," Moody said. "We could make a case a day on this situation."
If convicted both Buenrostro and Ogas could face more than a year behind bars.
