TRIMBLE, Colo. (AP) - The Colorado State Patrol says a teen driver in La Plata County wasn't watching the road and hit and killed a man walking to the grocery store.

Dawnelle Canaday, 18, of Durango faces charges of careless driving resulting in death. She was driving the 2002 Saturn sports utility vehicle that struck and killed 58-year-old Philip Gene Spotts on Monday morning.

Authorities say the Hermosa man walked alongside U.S. 550 every day to the Hermosa Country Market. He was thrown 192 feet by the impact and died instantly.

Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Chad Martin says Canaday was talking with her sister in the car and rolling down a window when she hit Spotts. Martin said she was driving about the posted limit of 60 mph.
