LAS CRUCES (AP) - Officers from about 20 law enforcement agencies in southern New Mexico are ready for Operation Lockdown, an effort aimed keeping roads safe during the Memorial Day weekend.
Officers will be increasing patrols and enforcement zones in six counties. Their focus includes drunk drivers, speeders and motorists who are not wearing seat belts.
The state Department of Transportation says more than two dozen sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols and phantom checkpoints are scheduled in the southwestern part of the state over the weekend.
State police will position one officer every 10 miles on Interstate 10.
Officers also will be at Elephant Butte Lake to enforce underage drinking laws.
