PORTALES, N.M. (KRQE) - Police are investigating counterfeit cash that is circulating the Portales area.
Police say over the past three weeks, 16 cashiers at several retailers around town have been fooled into taking the fake cash.
The Portales tribune reports officers have recovered counterfeit bills that have the same serial numbers, imperfect watermarks and lack security strips.
Police told the paper the counterfeiters mostly try to buy an inexpensive item with the fake money so they get change back.
Investigators say they are following leads in the case.
