Cop killer deemed too risky for parole

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A former death row inmate convicted of killing an Albuquerque police officer has been denied parole.
Joel Lee Compton, 59, shot Officer Gerald Cline at the Tewa Motor Lodge on Central Avenue NE near San Mateo Boulevard in 1983.
He was convicted of murder and sentenced to death, but then-Gov. Toney Anaya later commuted that to life, ehich made Compton eligible for parole after 30 years.
On Friday the New Mexico Parole Board said it's not in the best interest of society for Compton be granted parole and that there was substantial risk he wouldn't follow the conditions of release.
He'll be eligible to try again for parole in two years.
