An Albuquerque police officer is being dubbed a hero not for busting a criminal but for helping a teen at risk for a criminal career.
Officer Joe Chavez, a member of the Crisis Outreach and Support Team, was named hero of the week by Mayor Richard J. Berry in a ceremony at city hall on Friday.
Chavez went above and beyond the call of duty by helping a teen who was living a life of crime after being kicked out by her alcoholic parents, Berry said.
She had to move in with her unemployed boyfriend, he added.
Berry said Chavez knew the girl wasn't a criminal and guided her to a crime-free lifestyle.
"Police work is not always black and white," Berry said. "The cars are black and white, but the work these folks do isn't always black and white.
"I think the discretion used in this case to handle the situation in this manner is absolutely fantastic."
Chavez also helped the teen by giving her gift certificates for groceries.
