FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - A San Juan County judge has sentenced a convicted rapist to 46 years in prison for criminal sexual penetration, kidnapping and false imprisonment.
Matthew Wiggins, 26, was also sentenced for seven counts of battery against peace officers, for which he previously pleaded guilty.
Wiggins will not be eligible for parole until he is 62 years old.
Wiggins' mother Bonnie told the court her son was a victim of his surroundings, a child who fell through the cracks, and which no one was willing to help.
The victim wrote a letter to the court saying she endures ups and downs, fair days and bad nights.
The state and the victim asked for the maximum sentence of 73 and a half years in prison.
