ALBUQUREQUE (KRQE) - The man convicted of killing an APD officer, nearly 30 years ago, could soon find out if he will be released on parole.

Joel Lee Compton will go before the state parole board in early March.

Compton was convicted of fatally shooting 35-year-old Officer Gerald Cline in 1983.

He was initially sentenced to death by lethal injection, but then governor Toney Anaya commuted that to a life in prison during his last month in office.

The Albuquerque Journal reports a corrections department spokesman says Compton will deny any involvement in the crime and claim he has no recollection of killing the officer when he goes before the parole board.
