Chavez named in another investigation

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A former APD officer accused of killing his wife, has been named in another criminal investigation.

Authorities are now investigating how the vehicle identification number plate from a truck once owned by an APD detective wound up on a similar truck reported stolen by former officer Levi Chavez.

Police chief Ray Schultz said he immediately launched criminal and internal affairs investigations after learning about the vin plate on Friday afternoon.

The vin plate, identified in the Mexican police report, was registered to a vehicle formerly owned by detective Pete Dwyer and it looked as if it might have been tampered with.

Chavez, who was charged in April with Tera Chavez’s murder, had reported his F-250 stolen from the couple's Los Lunas home in October 2007.

Numerous local agencies have reportedly been investigating the Chavez family and other officers' involvement with stolen trucks for more than a year that's according to the wrongful death suit.
