RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) - Investigators still aren't sure why the son of a Rio Rancho police officer veered into oncoming traffic Thursday killing him and seriously injuring the other driver.
Adrian Garcia Jr. , 16, was on his way to Cleveland High School at about 7 a.m. when he swerved into the other lane on Paseo del Volcán and hit a pickup truck head-on.
The driver of the pickup, Beverly Maez, 36, of Rio Rancho, remains in a hospital recovering from a broken back and two broken feet.
Her 6-year-old daughter also was injured.
Police said both drivers and the girl were wearing their seatbelts.
Garcia, a sophomore at Cleveland, was on the track and junior-varsity track teams.
