LAS CRUCES (AP) - An associate of a Mexican drug cartel says he told members of a Deming family that the guns he purchased from them were bound for battle with a rival cartel.
Jose Roman made the comments Thursday in the trial of New Deal Shooting Sports owner Rick Reese, his wife and two of their sons. They're accused of selling 34 weapons and ammunition to undercover agents and a Mexican cartel member-turned-government informant, from 2010 to July 2011.
An attorney for the Reese family has characterized the 31-year-old Roman as a manipulative liar who is trying to deflect attention from his own criminal activity.
The Las Cruces Sun-News ( http://bit.ly/NFkrKz ) reports that Roman is a key witness for the federal government. The defense is expected to cross-examine him Friday.
