ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Two gunmen on the run since a botched robbery wounded a clerk Tuesday first walked past a surveillance camera at the car wash next door.
It was about 3 p.m., and the men were on their way to hold up the family dollar store in the 5900 block of Gibson Boulevard.
A customer who walked into the store right behind the robber also can be seen in the video released to KRQE news 13 Wednesday afternoon.
One of the gunmen was black, the other Hispanic, and both were armed and shrouded in big hoodies and dark glasses, according to police and witnesses.
Once inside the two accosted the clerk, Odwell Green, and demanded money.
That's when customer Patrick McGrow gathered as many people as he could including a pregnant woman and another woman with an oxygen tank, shepherded them to safety of a back room and called 9-1-1.
"After I walked past the guy in the black hoodie, I heard him rush the counter and told him to open up the register," McGrow said. "When I heard all this commotion, I headed back towards the back of the store."
Police said green was new to the job and couldn't open the register fast enough, so one of the robbers shot him in the leg. The would-be robbers then ran from the store into a neighborhood behind the building.
Police showed up about five minutes later.
There also is surveillance video from inside the store that could provide a better look at the suspects, but police have not released it.
Green has been released from UNM Hospital.
Investigators aren't saying if they have any leads on who these robbers are.
