ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A man shot and killed by an Albuquerque police officer responding to a burglar alarm last month was not armed, a police spokesman said Friday.
Roderick Jones, 42, was shot by Officer Brandon Carr during the burglary of a home in the 9100 block of Sandy Spring Avenue SW on Nov. 6.
"The investigation revealed there was not a gun or a knife on Mr. Jones," Albuquerque Police Department spokesman T.J. Wilham told KRQE News 13 on Friday.
Wilham said investigators found a bottle of tequila on the ground where Jones collapsed after the shooting. Investigators speculate Jones was attempting to reach for the bottle in his back pocket.
Carr and a second officer initially responded to the alarm and when they arrived found the back door was open. When the officers entered, they encountered Jones.
The officers reported they ordered Jones to surrender and yelled at him to show them his hands. When Jones made the move toward his pocket, Carr shot at him.
Carr shot again at Jones after he continued to run away. Jones made it to the front porch of the home and collapsed.
He died several hours later at UNM hospital from wounds to his stomach area.
Upon completion of the police shooting investigation, the findings will be forwarded to Bernalillo District Attorney Kari Brandenburg for final review.
Brandenburg will make a final decision based on the findings whether Carr was justified in shooting Jones.
