ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) - A barrage of gunfire rattled a Roswell neighborhood Wednesday night, and left a man dead. Now police are sorting through the chaos to find out exactly what happened.
This is the seventh murder this year in Chaves County. Police are still putting the pieces together in this case.
Police were called to the 200 block of West Bland Wednesday around 10:20 p.m. Detectives worked through the night, and into the morning collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses.
Witnesses said they heard gunshot after gunshot, up to 25 shots in all. There are bullet holes in a car and the home where it happened.
Late Thursday police confirmed the victim is Arthur Contreras, 22.
Witnesses said it seemed like the victim was being chased and that someone shot him as he was trying to go inside the home. Police have not yet confirmed that, however.
Witnesses also said everything happened very quickly and that there were young children outside the home at the time.
"The police department does not believe that this was a random act of violence at this time," Sabrina Morales, public information liaison for the Roswell Police Department, told KRQE News 13.
Police will not say if anyone is in custody yet for the crime although detectives have been executing search warrants to gather evidence.
