SANTA FE (AP) - A state judge has ordered former Public Regulation Commissioner Jerome Block Jr. to spend 4 ½ years on probation for election law violations and misuse of taxpayer money.
Block was sentenced Wednesday by District Judge Michael Vigil.
Block had faced up to 4 ½ years in prison after failing to comply with a plea agreement requirement to complete a court-supervised drug treatment program. Block's attorney has said his client is addicted to prescription painkillers and cocaine.
He resigned last year after pleading guilty to felonies, including fraudulent of a state-issued credit card.
The commission regulates utilities, telecommunications and insurance.
