LOS LUNAS, NM (KRQE) - Two teens accused of t hreatening to shoot up their middle school are now awaiting trial at home, not a jail cell.

Belen eighth graders Alejandro Ortega and Lawrence Chavez faced District Court Judge Violet Otero Monday, who granted both GPS-monitored house arrest.

Ortega, Chavez and two other middle schoolers have been arrested and accused of plotting to shoot classmates at Belen Middle School last Friday. Investigators say they were tipped off ahead of time and were able to stop the possible rampage.

It's unclear whether any had the means to carry out the alleged plans.

Both Ortega and Chavez were recently suspended and have possible gang ties.

District attorney Lemuel Martinez hopes all four teens can turn their lives around while they're still young.

"Hopefully we can rehabilitate these children and change their behavior so we don't see it again," Martinez said.

Two other teens connected with the plot, Mateo Jaquez and Kahleb Lucero, are scheduled to see Judge Otero Tuesday morning to learn whether they'll be allowed house arrest or not.
