Autopsy planned in Dulce shootout

DULCE, N.M. (KRQE) - Additional details are being released about the wanted fugitive, Rex Sherwood, the man likely killed in a police shooting inside a Dulce gas station.

Monday, KRQE Newsd 13 got a look at the truck he was spotted in last week when he opened fire on police.

Sherwood, 48, has no known criminal history.

Police say Sherwood was driving the truck when he was pulled over for not using a turn signal in Dulce Tuesday.

They say he was wearing a bullet proof vest and flack jacket and was armed with an AK-47 when he jumped out of the truck and got into a shootout with police.

He then fled into the mountains but a witness says he spotted someone matching Sherwood’s description breaking into the 64 gas station in Dulce Sunday morning.

When police approached the station the suspect barricaded himself inside and started shooting at them again.

State police fired back, called in the SWAT team to break down the door and then they sent in a robot that discovered the suspect's body inside.

Police are not sure if he killed himself or was shot by police.

They are waiting on an autopsy to verify the body is Sherwood’s.

Meanwhile New Mexico state police says they are not taking any chances.

"We still have patrols in the area because again we just don't know yet who this person is so we're not going to take any changes,” Lt. Robert McDonald said. “We still have officers out patrolling that area looking for any signs talking to people and stuff like that so the investigation is still ongoing."

Police say nothing else suspicious was found in the back of that truck.

The FBI took fingerprints from the body Sunday night and those are still being processed.
