SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A judge has deemed a 54-year-old man mentally fit to stand trial on charges that he fatally shot two people in January over a late rent payment.
Arthur Anaya is charged with fatally shooting 16-year-old Austin Urban and 51-year-old Theresa Vigil and fleeing from law enforcement for about four days before officers found him near his property south of Santa Fe.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that Anaya's lawyer, Joseph Campbell, didn't challenge Monday's ruling by state District Judge Stephen Pfeffer but asked for a hearing in about a week so that Anaya could be present.
Anaya has pleaded not guilty to the two counts of first-degree murder and other charges.
