LAS CRUCES (AP) - Las Cruces police have charged two men with aggravated burglary
with a deadly weapon and conspiracy in what officers say was an
attempted burglary that left one man dead.
Police called to an apartment complex Sunday found
27-year-old Steve Martinez dead outside an apartment.
Investigators say a resident who was apparently startled
awake grabbed a handgun and opened fire at people trying to break
in, striking one man, identified as Martinez.
Detectives say Martinez had been partying with 25-year-old
Mario Lee Aguilera and 27-year-old Jesus Manuel Vazquez and asked
them for a ride to collect some money.
Officers say Martinez led the way into the apartment and was
shot as he entered the bedroom.
Aguilera and Vazquez are being held on $50,000 bond.
