In Santa Fe Co. Jail on $1 million bond

SANTA FE (KRQE) - Arthur Anaya appeared calm on courtroom video monitors and said little besides "Yes ma'am," as he faced a judge for the first time since his Friday arrest.

Anaya, 54, was arraigned by video in Santa Fe County Magistrate Court in front of Judge Sandy Miera on two open counts of murder while he sat in Santa Fe County Jail.

Judge Miera kept Anaya's bond at $1 million, cash only, at the end of the short hearing.

Watching on the other end in the courtroom were families of the victims police say Anaya gunned down a week ago.

That included Ralph Romero, one of Theresa Vigil's brothers, and Priscilla Lovato, one of Vigil's nieces.

"The way he looked right now it looked like he didn't even care," said Romero. "He didn't look like he had no feelings at all."

"I wish the worst for that man," said Lovato. "I hope the worst possible, ever, for him."

Police say Anaya shot and killed Vigil and her daughter's boyfriend Austin Urban, 16, in a south Santa Fe home after a dispute over rent.

After shooting both, investigators say Anaya demanded Natalie Vigil, Theresa's daughter, put the bodies in the trunk of her car. Today, authorities confirmed that they have a voicemail recording on Vigil's son's phone where you can hear Anaya making that demand.

Anaya was on the run from authorities until Santa Fe County Sheriff's deputies and U.S. Marshalls cornered him in a home about a mile away from the scene of Monday's shooting.

A two-hour SWAT standoff ensued, ending with Anaya giving himself up on the advice of his defense attorney Tom Clark.

Clark told News 13 today his client has not made any statements to investigators and he has not been able to speak to Anaya without law enforcement present yet.

Anaya has a lengthy criminal past including convictions for armed robbery and aggravated assault. During a trial in the mid 1990's, he was found mentally unfit to stand trial.

"I'm pretty certain mental health issues will play a major role in this case as we move through the case," said Clark. "[We] plan to meet with Mr. Anaya this week and speak with him in detail about his mental health history and specific facts of this case."

Funeral services for Vigil and Urban will take place in Santa Fe later this week.

Austin Urban's funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anne's Parish.

Theresa Vigil's funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at San Isidro Cemetery.
