ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - It's the story making international news, the plot to kill and castrate Justin Bieber that police say was hatched inside a New Mexico prison. Now, one of the accused hit-men tells his side of the story and it's bizarre.
“There is a lot more to this story than meets the eye,” Mark Staake told News 13 Tuesday as he sat dressed in orange, behind glass in a private room at Albuquerque’s main jail. “This is a nightmare.”
He requested to speak to us to give his side of the story.
“There was no plan to kill Justin Bieber,” Staake said. “Like I told the FBI, I would have had a better chance of kidnapping Osama Bin Laden and killing him.”
Last November Staake, his nephew tanner Ruane, and convicted killer Dana Martin were all charged in what cops say was a plot to kill and castrate four men , including pop star Justin Bieber.
Staake and Martin met in prison in Las Cruces; Staake serving time for burglary and Martin for raping and strangling a teenage girl. Staake says his former friend is obsessed with Justin Bieber.
“He's got a tattoo of his face on his calf and he has all his songs, and the whole thing is, the only thing I knew about it, was he was writing him,” Staake said.
But he claims the two never plotted to kill the star.
“He just wanted Justin Bieber to know who he was, and he's done it. Unfortunately at my expense, but I am pretty sure Justin Bieber knows who this guy is now,” Staake said.
So why did Staake recruit his nephew to go to Vermont with him on Martin's behalf?
“I went to go pick up a car that he had given me,” Staake said. “We had made a deal in prison that he had given me a Ferrari. I had the title, the bill of sale, everything. He's been in for a while, he's not getting out, he had no money and I was supposed to sell it and give him half the money.”
Staake claims this was all about a classic car, not a quadruple murder plot.
He ended up making a wrong turn, was stopped at the Canadian border and arrested for violating his probation by leaving New Mexico.
So, if this was all about a car, what about this call Martin made to Ruane after Staake was arrested , where Ruane mentions going by the house of one of the alleged targets, who wasn't home.
Ruane”F*** dude. It pisses me off so bad, brother. I wanted this s*** to go down so bad. S*** I was ready. S*** we were there last night, dude.
Staake admits they did go to a man's house for Martin.
“His ex-boyfriend. He wanted to find one of his ex-lovers,” Staake said.
Staake says they were just trying to confirm the man's address so Martin could write to him from prison. So what about Ruane telling Martin they were ready to castrate their victims.
Ruane: “We went and we bought, you know, the f***ing hedge clippers, the hand hedge clippers.”
Staake says he doesn't know why his nephew was even talking about castration.
He says he only knows two things about Dana Martin, one, “I wish I would have never met him.” And two, “He's a homicidal, sociopathic pedophile. They should have never left him alive.”
Ruane was arrested the day after Staake, after Dana Martin contacted police to tell them about his plot to kill Justin Bieber.
Investigators believe Martin blabbed because he still wanted publicity for the Bieber plot after Ruane decided not to go through with it without his uncle by his side. All three are charged in the murder-for-hire scheme.
