ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A man accused of shooting and killing his 9-month-old daughter during a dispute on Tuesday afternoon told police he was "pushed over the edge," officials said Wednesday.
Christopher Rains, 22, faces multiple charges including child abuse resulting in death.
Rains was arrested Tuesday afternoon. During hours of questioning, he told detectives he found out his girlfriend was speaking with another man.
In the heat of the argument, according to police, he grabbed his gun with one hand and the baby in the other.
Then, according to police, Rains said he dropped the child to the floor and asked the mother, "Was it worth it?"
Rains told police he didn't want the other man to be the baby's new father.
Police said Rains told detectives this wasn't the first time he had pointed a gun to the baby's head, but there are no records that any form of abuse had taken place in the home before Tuesday.
Rains is being held at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center on a $500,000 cash-only bond.
