Killer still incompetent

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The Albuquerque man who gunned down five people is still incompetent to stand trial.

Bernalillo District Court Judge Neil Candelaria signed off on the order this week, requiring Hyde to remain at the state mental hospital after reviewing his mandatory two year mental evaluation.

Hyde went on a one day killing spree across Albuquerque in August 2005.  The victims were a Department of Transportation worker, two employees at a motorcycle shop and two Albuquerque police officers.

Hyde suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and was later found incompetent to stand trial. He was sentenced to 179 years in the state mental hospital.  If he is found to be competent, treatment would stop and preparations for a trial would begin.

His doctors have said even though he is getting the best treatment available, his paranoid schizophrenia is so severe, it's likely he'll never get better.

Hyde's sentence at the state mental hospital is the same sentence he would have been given had he been convicted in a criminal trial.
