ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A crash involving a driver who hit a light pole and a bagel shop shut down part of Central Avenue in front of the University of New Mexico Thursday afternoon.
The crash near the busy intersection of Central and Stanford Drive happened shortly after 3 p.m. and seriously injured the driver of a minivan.
According to police the man first clipped the light pole and then hit the building housing Einstein Bros Bagels.
The driver, described only as "an elderly male," suffered a broken neck and initially was reported to be in critical condition. A police spokesperson later described his condition as stable.
As of 4 p.m. the eastbound lanes of Central were closed with traffic being diverted south on Stanford.
There were no reports of additional injuries.
