SANTA FE (KRQE) - The corrections secretary is asking the state to pony up millions of dollars to buy and renovate new offices for the Probation and Parole Division and calls it a case of spending money to save money.
Walking through the current Probation and Parole office in Albuquerque's Nob Hill neighborhood, the need for repairs is evident.Bathroom faucets run constantly, there is mold underneath the ceiling tiles and various other problems throughout.
State Secretary of Corrections Gregg Marcantel says it's become a hard situation for employees to work in. What makes it worse, Marcantel says, is how much the state is spending to rent the building: $32,000 a month.
Marcantel says it would be a sounder financial decision for the state to buy a new building and combine that office with another one in Albuquerque.
He estimates that the state will make up the cost of the new building in eight years and says that's when the savings will begin.
