ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) - A state lawmaker has introduced a bill giving New Mexico cities the option of enacting curfew laws for minors.

Local governments could restrict minors from being left alone at night in public while giving police the power to take children back to school during the day.

Roswell Rep. Dennis Kintigh tells the Roswell Daily Record the bill is intended to keep children from becoming victims of potential crimes while giving police a useful law enforcement tool.

The executive director of the New Mexico American Civil Liberties Union says the bill is flawed because it would allow police to unlawfully detain youths and possibly assign them a criminal penalty if they repeat offend.
