SWAT standoff ends with one suspect dead

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - It was a massive SWAT standoff -- as APD went after the man they believe shot an Albuquerque Police Officer in the back Sunday night.

Then a police sniper ended the five-hour standoff , leaving one suspect dead. Chief Ray Schultz says it was State Police, not APD that fired the final shot.

Police say an anonymous source led them to the suspect in Sunday night's shooting. When they arrived at the apartment complex in the Heights, police say they tried to get the man and his brother to come out.

"As we attempted to talk to them they hung up on us multiple times and they refused to come out," Chief Ray Schultz said.

Around 11 am, the SWAT team and crisis negotiators were called to the scene. Two local schools were put on lockdown. Officers yelled at residents of nearby apartments to stay inside.

"They could see subjects inside were barricading windows with mattresses and other types of items."

Around 12:30 State Police were called in to assist. police say they got search warrants to throw gas inside the apartment. That's when police say they came under fire.

"Shots were being fired from multiple windows inside the apartment and it appears the subjects were able to actually burrow their way through the wall from another apartment and we received fire from another apartment," Schultz said.

Police say around 2 PM, the brother surrendered. but the other person continued to shoot from inside the apartment for the next two hours. Schultz says both APD and State Police shot at the suspect - but it appears the final shot came from a State Police officer.

"The subject appeared at the doorway with a handgun in his hand at which time a New Mexico State Police officer fired one round at the suspect hitting him one time," Schultz said. 

A woman at the scene said it was her son that was fatally shot.

She identified him as 21-year-old Kendall Carroll.

"When I asked to talk to him they wouldn't let me talk to him," the woman said. "He's 21. He'd be 22 Thursday if they hadn't killed him."

Police say in the five hour standoff - they called the suspect 90 times and called out over the PA system 25 times.

APD is taking the lead in the investigation with State Police assisting.

The suspect who surrendered - identified by sources as Michael Carroll - is in police custody.

Police hope he will shed some light on what happened in Sunday night's shooting of an officer - and why.
