New Mexico's congressmen react to NRA proposal

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - News 13 reached out to members of New Mexico’s congressional delegation for reaction to the NRA’s proposal to have an armed police officer at every school.

Democratic Rep. Martin Heinrich – soon to be Sen. Heinrich – said, “The NRA had an opportunity today. They could have brought some real solutions to the table, but they failed to do that.”

Heinrich wants reform that would limit firearms impact when used illegally and keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill.  Heinrich says he owns a gun and wants reform the majority of gun owners could support.

Republican Rep. Steve Pearce said the NRA’s proposal isn’t so drastic, considering APS has its own armed police force already working in several Albuquerque schools.

“In recent years, federal funding for school security measures has been allowed to lapse,” he said. “Clearly this needs to be reviewed by Congress.”

Pearce added, “Laws alone will not change the depravity exhibited by Adam Lanza in murdering innocent children.”
