KAFB expands search for spilled fuel

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The Air Force has agreed to drill more wells to try to determine how close leaked jet fuel has come to Albuquerque water supply wells.

The decision comes as the military faces criticism from the state environmental department for its plans to monitor the movement of contamination.

The Air Force had proposed three shallow wells between known areas of contamination near Kirtland Air Force Base and the nearest municipal water supply wells. But regulators in a letter last week called that proposal "inadequate" given the threat to the city's drinking water supply.

The Albuquerque Journal reports ( http://bit.ly/I4UWlP ) the Air Force told a community meeting Wednesday night it has now agreed to an additional six wells in southeast Albuquerque. Another 24 wells are under discussion with regulators.
