ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Three people have been killed and another two are in the hospital after an early morning crash near Grants.

The Cibola County Undersheriff tells KRQE News 13 that around 6 a.m. a semi-truck headed east on I-40 crossed the median into westbound lanes.  The semi missed a flatbed truck loaded with pipes and then clipped a fuel truck before slamming head on into an Enterprise moving van.

All three people traveling in that vehicle were killed instantly.

The semi truck driver had to be airlifted to UNM Hospital and his passenger was taken by ground ambulance to Cibola General Hospital.

The crash and the investigation shut down Interstate 40 for as much as 11 miles at one point.

Officials say that is down to about six miles westbound.

Eastbound I-40 is now completely back open.
