Officers shoot, kill man during SWAT

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - APD Chief Ray Schultz has confirmed that an officer has killed a suspect during a SWAT situation Tuesday. 

SWAT was called to an area near Indian School and Constitution, around 10 o’clock Tuesday morning after two men barricaded themselves inside an apartment.

The stand-off dragged on for over five hours before one of the men surrendered. During that time authorities say they asked the suspect to come out more than 90 times.

Officials say the baricaded suspect fired multiple shots at officers from New Mexico State Police and Albuquerque Police Department. 

APD and NMSP officers returned fire, killing the suspect.

It is unknown what agency shot the suspect.

Police have not confirmed this yet, but sources have been telling KRQE News 13 the men could be connected to Sunday night's shooting where an Albuquerque police officer was shot in the back.

A neighbor told KRQE News 13 earlier Tuesday evening that family members had been trying to get police to let them try and talk to the man they now believe is dead.

“If there's a family member that can go up in there and try to talk on their own strength of god, then let them give that one shot before you take that one shot,” Robert Vaughn said.

No names have been released at this time.

According to the chief, a lot of people in the area were in danger.

As a result, nearby Chelwood Elementary School was placed in lockdown, then in a shelter-in-place status.
    
The shelter-in-place has since been lifted.
