USPS to close processing centers

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The USPS announced Thursday it will close seven mail processing facilities in New Mexico.

A spokesperson for the postal service said in an email the cuts will save them about $4.5 million in New Mexico, nearly half of that will come from one place.

The closures are part of a nationwide consolidation to keep the postal service afloat.

In New Mexico Alamogordo, Farmington and Roswell stand to lose the most positions, 34 combined.

19 of those jobs are in Roswell.

Clovis, Socorro, Truth or Consequences and Tucumcari will lose another 9 jobs altogether.

USPS said it hopes to move most of those workers impacted to other jobs within the postal service.

Once the consolidation is complete Farmington, Socorro, T or C and Tucumcari will have their mail processed in Albuquerque.

Clovis and Roswell mail will go through Lubbock, TX and Alamogordo will go through El Paso.

That means it will take longer for those cities to get their mail, the UPSS said first class mail typically takes one to three days, under this new setup it could take a day longer.

The postal service said it is not sure when the facilities will close.

Workers were told about the decision Wednesday night after a five month study was completed.

The postal service has been losing billions of dollars a year.
