Ski Cloudcroft fights for attention

After years of low snowfall left Ski Cloudcroft closed and mostly forgotten, a few good storms have helped the small hill open for business this winter.

"People have forgotten about us," said Ski Cloudcroft Director Daniel King. "The past two years we haven't actually been open at all from lack of snow which is what makes this so much the better. With two very warm and very dry years behind us it's been difficult for the ski run. Obviously it's impossible to make money if you're not open."

The winter storm this week dropped about a foot and a half of fresh powder, but so far, few have taken advantage.

King said he frequently gets calls or emails from people asking if the ski lift is running. He says with snow continuing to dump, he's hopeful more people will make their way to the southern Sacramento Mountains.

"We can ski just fine on 20 inches and the fact that we have over 40 now is just magnificent," said King. "We think we've got enough snow to make it through spring break this year."

The resort is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
