FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - Members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union will be meeting this week to consider a job action against Safeway.

A once-extended labor contract was allowed to expire Sunday. The labor contract between workers at Safeway's four New Mexico stores and corporate officials previously was extended through Nov. 14 after last-minute negotiations in late October failed to reach an agreement.

Union president Greg Frazier said negotiation meetings Nov. 9 found little consensus, and the work contract was allowed to expire.

Safeway spokeswoman Kris Staaf said the company will continue negotiations with the union workers on Dec. 1.

Staaf said it's not unusual for the company not to extend a contract and for employees to work without a labor agreement.
