Rebel Donuts serves attitude and imagination

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A new donut shop opened recently in Albuquerque with a name that definitely fits mission.

Rebel Donuts on Wyoming just north of Menaul, offers unique flavors some of which you won't find anywhere else.

Like maple bacon, birthday cake, red velvet, cookies 'n' cream, breaking bad (yes in tribute of the show) and many other unique creations.

The shop is the creation of Carrie Mettling who has an interesting story.

Her background in is architecture but years ago she left that job to open up a gourmet cupcake shop. It didn't prove to be a perfect fit.

"I thought I missed my old career so I sold it and went back to it," she said. "Then I realized I was still unhappy and bored.

"Then I got laid off, so it forced me to start thinking about another venture."

That is how Rebel Donuts was born.

The shop opened 4 months ago and is very busy. In fact they are already working on a second location on the West Side near Coors Boulevard NW and Paseo del Norte.

You'll notice when you walk into Rebel Donuts that the employees embrace the rebel attitude. Many have piercings, colored hair, tattoos and one even dons a Mohawk.

Mettling says she embraces the look.

"It's about an image," she says. "The image I want to present is that we are a little bit different, and we are cool with that.

"We just try to push the boundaries of donutdom."
