LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (AP) - The National Nuclear Security Administration has approved a plan to cut staff at Los Alamos National Laboratory through voluntary buyouts.
Lab officials last week announced plans to reduce their permanent full-time workforce by between 400 and 800 employees this spring, or as much as 11 percent. Under the program, the lab says about 7,600 workers are eligible to apply for a buyout. The lab also employs more than 3,000 contractors, students and other workers.
The plan calls for a severance package based on years of service, ranging from 1 to 39 weeks.
Lab Director Charlie McMillan said plans to offer voluntary buyouts are part of "an attempt to reduce the risks of involuntary layoffs."
