ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - U.S. Postal Service plans to cut 35,000 jobs and consolidate mail-processing sites could affect post offices and jobs in as many as seven New Mexico cities.
The Postal Service began notifying employees today of the pending changes, according to the American Postal Workers Union.
The USPS has said it will close or consolidate 223 processing sites nationwide in hopes of saving $2.6 billion annually.
A list of New Mexico posts offices approved for consolidating its mail processing elsewhere includes Alamogordo, Clovis, Farmington, Roswell, Socorro, Truth or Consequences and Tucumcari.
In a statement released earlier today, USPS said it expected virtually all of the sites on the list would be closed or consolidated along with 12 additional sites.
Albuquerque is not on the list, and Las Cruces has already lost it mail processing to facilities in El Paso, Texas.
None of the closings and consolidations would happen before the middle of May, according to reports.
Colorado post offices on the consolidation list include Durango, Alamosa, Salida and Colorado Springs.
