(KRQE) Santa Fe, New Mexico - Santa Fe mom Alexandra Merlino has helped create a clothing line named Teres Kids.
It's focused on what she calls "optimal comfort," but if you look closely you will see something about it is different. It eliminates the seams, waistbands and tags that so many kids find uncomfortable.
Merlino spent much of her career designing products, but six years ago she quit to have her daughter. After staying home for four years, Merlino wanted to get back to designing, this time with a focus on kids
"I really wanted to do something that was made in the U.S." says Merlino
Merlino worked with her friend, a fellow mom who lives in California, and came up with Teres Kids.
Through the design process they learned of something called tactile insensitivity. Those who have it include autistic children and those with eczema and clothing allergies.
The simplest seam or tag can irritate them and make them lose focus on day-to-day activities.
Teres kids deals with that by basically sewing the clothing inside out. The rough seam you see with traditional clothing is on the outside on Teres kids clothes but done with style.
Merlino says growing her business is still a lot of work. She laughs when she says that she is the company's shipping company. Her partner's home is the design studio.
You can find Teres Kids in Albuquerque at Zap....Oh's in Nob Hill and Indigo Baby in Santa Fe. The line is also sold online and at 53 other stores across the world.
