ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - As the balloons reach great heights during Balloon Fiesta and the Broadway Musical "The Lion King" hits high notes, New Mexico's economy is soaring too.
Businesses from Albuquerque to Taos are expecting boosts from tourism.
Nob Hill is usually a busy place during a typical weekend but during Balloon Fiesta's opening weekend, business was booming.
"We do get our fair share of tourism. Actually, in Nob Hill and especially at Scalo, we do. Quite a few people from all over," said Scalo's manager Scott Murray.
Tourists like Michael and Ellen Bersons, came to New Mexico from Maryland for Balloon Fiesta. Since Friday, they've stopped in Taos, Santa Fe, Old Town Albuquerque and Nob Hill.
"The shopping bags are back in the room. We spent a lot of money in Santa Fe," said Ellen Bersons.
Balloon Fiesta is known to boost the local economy, pumping in more than $50 million. On average tourists stay in the state for four days.
This year Scalo is expecting a 20% increase of its business.
The sold out Lion King show at Popejoy is also helping them.
"We do well with Popejoy especially. That's pretty much the one that's our go-to. All kinds of special events help us," said Murray.
