Designer adds sparkle to American Idol

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) - Look closely and you'll see New Mexico front and center on " American Idol ." None of the contestants left is from here, but what they are wearing is.

The creations of Rio Rancho jewelry designer Alan Scott are definitely a big hit on the show.

Contestant Skylar Laine has dazzled the judges and fans this season. She wears fabulous clothes but did you see her wrist?

That piece of jewelry came from a Rio Rancho garage.

"Skylar Laine went on my website, on my Facebook picked out what she liked," Alan Scott of Alan Scott Designer said.

Scott started designing jewelry, purses, belts, buckles and guitar straps in 2006. Country singer Rodney Atkins first took notice.

"He's the one that got me to meet Kelly Pickler," Scott said. "After Kelly Pickler, it just went from there."

Everyone from Randy Travis to Dierks Bentley wears Scott's cuffs.

And, not many people can say this:

"I actually turned the Black Eyed Peas down," Scott said. "They wanted 500 gift bags in seven days. I had to turn them down because it's not feasible."

Because of word of mouth among celebrities, business is booming.

"I have Skylar Laine and did have Colton Dixon," Scott continued. "Of course he's no longer on the show but great seeing two of the American Idols on stage wearing my cuffs."

Scott also put together gift bags with his jewelry and other New Mexico products for the Super Bowl. He'll do that again next year.
