BELEN, N.M. (KRQE) - A freight train derailed in Belen Tuesday afternoon scattering coal, tearing up track and blocking a major route out of the city.
Seven cars of the coal train jumped the tracks in the BNSF Railway yard near Jarales Road shortly before 5 p.m.
No was hurt, but some of the open-topped cars toppled dumping coal. Traffic was detoured and trains on the transcontinental route delayed.
The railroad reported traffic was moving around the site by around 8 p.m. The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
Rail Runner Express commuter trains stop at the north end of the
Belen freight yard and were not affected.
