ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) - Xcel Energy's Southwestern Public Service Company plans to diversify its renewable energy portfolio and is seeking proposals for new biomass resources.
The utility says the solicitation of proposals will enable it comply with state regulatory requirements and help spur economic development in the state.
SPS will require about 435,000-megawatt-hours of energy - or about 10 percent of its New Mexico retail sales - produced by renewable resources beginning in 2011. The requirement will jump to 15 percent in 2015 and 20 percent in 2020.
SPS plans to generate more than 43,000 megawatt-hours from biomass sources. That could include animal waste, timber, brush or landfill gas.
The company says it prefers that the biomass resources be located in New Mexico.
