ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Authorities say a former parishioner at an Albuquerque church, stabbed a church volunteer in the chest with a small knife early Sunday.

Police say the incident happened at The Church Christian Academy in northwest Albuquerque when 47-year-old William Santos approached 46-year-old Jerome Johnson, who allegedly took out a knife and stabbed him once in the chest.

The attack happened in a hallway during church services.

Johnson left the scene but was later arrested near the church. He faces aggravated battery and assault charges.

Witnesses told police the men had a contentious past, but investigators say they do not know what led to the attack.

Santos was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.
