ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - In the minutes before the latest shooting involving an Albuquerque Police Department officer, calls poured into the 911 dispatch center.
"There's a guy in our parking lot with a shotgun," said a woman calling from an apartment complex in the 400 blocks of Española Street SE.
"Yeah, he's got a big-ass clip he just unloaded right now," a male caller said. "It's got an extended (magazine)."
Police say it wasn't a shotgun that convicted felon Dennis Aragón was carrying near Zuni and Louisiana on Thursday afternoon.
Instead it was a .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle that resembles an assault weapon.
Police have said Aragón was at the apartment complex to settle a drug debt although a man claiming to be his intended target said a prison beef was behind the incident.
Aragón had only been out of prison since Monday, police said.
The rifle was loaded and the safety off as officers ordered him to drop it. But when Aragón drew the rifle to his shoulder, 13-year APD veteran Mark Hill shot him three times.
Aragón remains in critical condition. If he survives, APD will ask federal officials prosecute him.
