(KRQE) - A blaze that had been set to clear brush but burned out of control over the weekend spread into Los Alamos on Wednesday, forcing the evacuation of all 11,000 residents of this town, the site of America's most storied nuclear laboratory.
The entire town was evacuated when the Cerro Grande Fire went out of control and started burning houses in the town.
Driven by swirling winds of up to 60 mph, fire rolled from block to block in abandoned Los Alamos on Thursday, burning scores of homes down to their foundation in the town where the atomic bomb was built.
Five days later, high afternoon winds have re-fueled the Cerro Grande fire, which has consumed over 44,323 acres, and destroyed or damaged over 400 homes.
