SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The city of Santa Fe plans to give Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. 1st Class Leroy Petry a hero's welcome.

A parade in honor of the Santa Fe native will make its way down Bishop's Lodge Road to the Santa Fe Plaza on Monday morning. A reception will follow.

Petry was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama on July 12 in a ceremony at the White House.

The 31-year-old Petry earned the award by grabbing an enemy grenade during a fight at a compound in eastern Afghanistan in 2008. As he tried to throw it, the grenade blew his hand off, but his actions saved his own life and the lives of two comrades.

He was also shot through both legs during the fight.
