FORT RILEY, Kan. (KRQE) - A New Mexico soldier has died from wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit in Iraq last week.
Army Spc. Tony Carrasco, Jr., 25, was among troops providing dismounted security in Ad Dawr, Iraq, when insurgents attacked with small arms fire, according to the 1st Infantry Division public-affairs office. Carrasco reportedly was hit by sniper fire.
Carrasco, of Berino in Doña Ana County, enter the Army in January 2008 and served as a field artillery specialist in 2nd Battalion, 32nd Field Artillery in the division's 4th Brigade. He was a 2003 graduate of Gadsden High School in Anthony, N.M.
He was stationed at Fort Riley, Kan.
