Water workshop teaches urban tricks

LOS LUNAS, N.M. (KRQE) - Some of the many tricks to conserving water in and around urban homes will be featured in an April 30 workshop in Los Lunas.

“Because we live in a semi-arid desert, we all need to conserve water whenever possible,” said Kyle Tator, Valencia County agriculture agent. “We want to raise the awareness of people living on metered water systems of ways they can help conserve water and in turn help decrease their water bill.”

New Mexico State University’s Valencia County Cooperative Extension Service is presenting a free workshop from 5-8 p.m. Friday, April 30, at the Extension office, 404 Courthouse Road in Los Lunas, to share water-saving tricks.

Anne-Marie Wilson, Valencia County Extension home economics agent, will present ways to save water in the home, while Curtis Smith, NMSU Extension urban horticulturalist, and Tator will demonstrate ways to harvest rain water and use the traditional olla underground irrigation system. Smith will also discuss the principles of xeriscape landscaping.

All participants of the event, which is co-sponsored by the Rio Grande Basin Initiative , will receive a free home water conservation kit and will be entered for a chance to win a water conservation door prize.
