Rockslide cuts water to 600 farmers

FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - A rockslide that blocked an irrigation ditch has cut off water to hundreds of farmers in the Kirtland area.

The water to more than 600 farmers in Kirtland, Fruitland and Waterflow stopped Saturday morning. The Farmington Daily-Times reports rocks from a cliff landed directly in the Farmers Mutual Ditch sometime Friday night.

Ditch manager Ken Hubbs says rockfalls are common at that spot and have blocked the ditch before but never has the damage been so bad.

Association board chairman and farmer said Lawrence Stock says emergency relief funds from the state are being sought because the agency can't afford to clear the debris.

Stock says the area's hay growers are anxious to water their crops soon so they can harvest a second or third cutting.
