ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The 17th annual America's Challenge gas-balloon race is officially underway after launching from Balloon Fiesta Park Sunday afternoon.

Currently, one of three American teams is in the lead after covering more than 500 miles. At least report the balloon pilot by Peter Cuneo and Barbara Fricke was north of Dallas-Fort Worth.

The America's Challenge race-tracking map shows the balloonists drifting almost due east with three craft over Oklahoma and one above the Texas Panhandle.

This year pilots are using hydrogen balloons instead of helium because there is a worldwide shortage of helium.

Five teams are competing trying to make it as far as they can for the title.
